Possible Candidates for Addition to Everett Collection As Suggested by Bibliographies Examined

(See Table That Follows for Title and Source Connections)

Bentley, Diana (2002) The seven wonders of the ancient world. New York: Oxford University Press.

Macauley, David (1999) Building the book cathedral. Boston: Houghton Mifflin.

Malone, Mary (1995) Maya Lin: Architect and artist. Springsfield, NJ, USA: Enslow Publishers.

Murphy, Wendy B. (1990) Frank Lloyd Wright. Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Silver Burdett Press.

(Later deleted in favor of Rubin, which looks to be the best from the Hornbook review.)

Perdrizet, Marie-Pierre (1992) The cathedral builders. Brookfield, CT: Millbrook Press.

Riggs, Jennifer (1994) Architecture and construction. New York: Scholastic.

(Later decided to remove until I could at least examine it.  Possible redundant.)

Rubin, Susan Goldman (1994) Frank Lloyd Wright. New York: Abrams

Seltzer, Isadore (1992) The house I live in: At home in America. New York: Macmillan.

Singer, Donna (1994) Structures that changed the way the world looked. Austin: Raintree Steck-Vaughn.

Thorne-Thomsen (1994) Frank Lloyd Wright for kids. Chicago: Chicago Review Press.

(Later removed in favor of Rubin.)

Ventura, Piero (1993) Houses, structures, methods, and ways of living. Boston: Houghton Mifflin.

Wood, Richard (1995) Architecture. New York: Thomson Learning.

(Later decided to remove until I could at least examine it.  I feared it might be redundant.)

Zelver, Patricia (1994) The wonderful Towers of Watts. New York: Tambourine Books

(Decided to remove until I could examine it.  Fear it might be no better than current title.

What I would really like to find is one with color photos.  This title has watercolors.)

Note for Instructor: The above list, and its accompanying chart were developed as I examined sources, including the catalogs of the two large systems in the area, King County Library System (KCLS) and Seattle Public Library (SPL).  If the catalogs are noted in the chart it is because the particular title was obviously circulating well. The catalogs also included reviews for the more recent books, and although I read them, I did not note them on the chart.  I waited until I had narrowed the list of possible additions before using Children’s Book Review Index.

Perhaps it would move better in the 900’s?

J726.640   Lace, William W. (2001) The medieval cathedral. San Diego: Lucent Books.

Retain: Newer book, but if circ doesn’t pick up, weeding is

appropriate course since topic is nicely covered by Macaulay.

J726.8       Moorcroft, Christine (1998) The Taj Mahal. Austin, TX: Raintree Steck-Vaughn.

Retain: good circ. Beautiful book with good reviews.

J726.8095  DuTemple, Leslie (2003) The Taj Mahal. Minneapolis: Lerner Publications Co.

Retain: New with good reviews.

J728          Dorros, Arthur (1992) This is my house. New York: Scholastic.

Retain: adequate circulation.  Would probably move better in picture books.

J728          Jupo, Frank (1974) a place to stay: Man’s home through the ages. New York: Dodd, Mead and Co.

J728          Osmond, Edward (1956) Houses. New York: Macmillan.

Retain: It’s still circulating.

J728         Yue, David and Charlotte (1984) The tipi: a center of Native American life. New York: A.A. Knopf.

Retain: Interior looks somewhat dated but content is excellent.  Includes tipi construction

information  and diagrams.  During some years it circulates a lot. (Reports?)

J728.0973 Devlin, Harry (1967) To grandfather’s house we go: a roadside tour of  American homes.  New York: Parents’ Magazine Press.

J728.0973 Glenn, Patricia Brown (1995) Under every roof: A kid’s style and field guide to the architecture of American houses. New York: John Wiley &

                Sons.

Retain? This is considered a classic, but I really think the content

Is more appealing to nostalgic or house-hunting adults than to young people.

J728.8       Cole, Joanna; Degen, Bruce (2002) Ms. Frizzle’s adventures: Medieval  castle. New York: Scholastic Press.

Retain: Popular character/series with good circulation.

J728.8094 Kruckmann, Peter O. (2001) The king and his castle: Neuschuanstein.  London: Prestel Verlag.

Retain: Newer book with somewhat surprisingly good circulation.

J728.81     Adkins, Jan (1971) The art and industry of sandcastles. [New York]: Walker.

J728.81     Sancha, Sheila (1979) The castle story. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell.

Retain: Fair circulation, but massive amount of text and small print make it unappealing

to youth.  Consider getting another copy of Williams or an additional castle book.

J728.81     Siebert, Ted (1990) The art of sandcastling. Seattle, Wash: Romar Books.

Retain: occasional circ, possible in-house use for illustrations.

Text more likely to be of interest to adults only.

J728.81     Williams, Brian (1994) Forts and castles. [New York]: Viking.

Needs rrpair or Replacement (x2? See Sancha). Retain: Content and illustrations remain fresh. Good circ.

J728.8109 Salley, Victoria (2001) Castles and knights. New York: Prestel Verlag.

Retain: Newer book with good circulation.

Titles and Copies to be Weeded

Looking at circulation, there is little evidence that any more than two copies – one for each branch – are needed for most of these titles.  This would of course not be the case if there were any prediction that another branch will be opening in the foreseeable future.  Barring that, I would be inclined to weed all copies above two, except in those cases noted in the above where circulation or condition warrant retaining more copies.  In some cases one or two copies need to be weeded for condition anyway.  I might consider creating a display of books in this section before weeding third copies.  Many of the books have great visual and browsing appeal.  If they were put in front of patrons, I think they would move.

I believe the following nine titles merit complete removal from the collection for the reasons stated.  I have not yet checked to see if any of them happen to be valuable, and would do so before I got rid of them.  The only one I consider at all likely in this regard is Churches by Vale, but one never knows.

J720        Barr, Donald (1964) The how and why wonder book of building. New York: Grosset & Dunlop.

Weed: info in this volume is good, but the book smells musty,

the pages are yellowed, and the illustrations are dated. Last circ Oct 98.

J720.9      Cesarani, Gian Paolo; Ventura, Piero, ill. (1983) Grand construction.  New York: G.P. Putnam’s Sons.

Book has come loose from cover, content jumps around in time
without  even including dates, and it is not circulating.

J721.0421 Ingoglia, Gina; LaPadula, Tom, ill. (1989) The big book of real skyscrapers.  New York: Grosset & Dunlap.

Unappealing, content done better in more recent books, not circulating.

J725.0904 Cox, Reg; Morris, Neil (1996) The seven wonders of the modern world.  Parsippany, NJ: Silver Burdett.

Dull text, uninteresting photographs, not circulating.

J726          Parker, Jane (1997) Pyramids and temples. Austin, TX: Raintree Steck-Vaughn.

Content is better done in other titles in collection, not circulating.

J726.1208  Nardo, Don (1999) The Parthenon of ancient Greece. San Diego: Lucent Books.

All the books in this Lucent Books series are filled with smaller font text and have only sparse
black and white uninteresting photographs.  This one at least is older, and has been given a chance to circulate.
Since it hasn’t, it is time to weed it.  The Parthenon is well covered within some other titles.

J726.5       Vale, Edmund; Mansbridge, John, ill. (1954) Churches. London: B.T. Batsford.

Yellowed, musty book with dated appearance.   Only 3 circs since 1996.
Really appears to be a book of interest to adults only.

J728          Jupo, Frank (1974) a place to stay: Man’s home through the ages. New York: Dodd, Mead and Co.

Both copies of this book are yellowed and unappealing.

One last circulated in 1996, the other in 1999.

J728.0973 Devlin, Harry (1967) To grandfather’s house we go: a roadside tour of American homes.  New York: Parents’ Magazine Press.

Book is shoddy workmanship.  Many illustrations darkened.  Last circ Jan 2001. I feel the

only patrons who would find this Title of any appeal would be nostalgic adults, not children.

J728.81     Adkins, Jan (1971) The art and industry of sandcastles. [New York]: Walker.

Book is falling apart with yellowed pages and circulation does not warrant replacing it.  The “sandcastle” content is actually
minimal, the author’s intent being to inform children about the construction and purpose of real castles.  I doubt that patrons looking for
that kind of information would look in a sandcastle book.  It’s an idea that didn’t work.  The information is available in other titles.

Titles To Be Added To Collection With Review Citations and Other Rationale

My overall rationale is that if the title is well reviewed, especially in multiple sources, then it is probably important to have in the collection.  I was particularly impressed if the title was already in the KCLS and/or SPL collection and appeared to be circulating well.  It should be noted that with some of the older core titles, it may actually be the case that Everett has already owned and discarded it for one reason or another, but I have no way of knowing that.

Clinton, Susan (1986) I can be an architect. Chicago: Children’s Press

BL v. 82 June 15, 1986 p. 1537

Gillespie(C) indicates that this is a core title

There is no occupational title in collection,

Corbishley, Mike (1996) World of architectural wonders. New York: Peter Bedrick

BL v.93 June 1, 1997 p. 1989+

HB Guide v.8 Fall 97 p.363

SLJ v.43 July 1997 p.81

Volume also listed as core title in Gillespie T., Homa, Horn, Price, and Wilson.

It will be good to add something aimed at older children to current similar titles.

Crosbie, Michael J. (2000) Arches to zigzags: An architecture ABC. New York: Harry N. Abrams.

BL v.97 Feb. 21, 2001 p.1054

CCB-B v.54 Dec 2000 p.140

SLJ v.46 Dec 2000 p.132

Adding this title and the two below because they have good reviews and

they will be something in the subject area for young children.

Crosbie, Michael J.; Rosenthal, Steve (1995) Architecture animals.  Washington, DC: Preservation Press.

HB Guide Interactive (subject “architecture”) See above title.

HB indicates that this is impressive.  Current Stadiums is popular.

Doherty, Craig A. and Katherine M. (1997) The Seattle Space Needle. Woodbridge, CT:  Blackbirch Press.

HB Guide v.8 Spring 1997 p.137

Review is terse, but title would seem necessary in the Pacific Northwest.

It is circulating well at SPL

ASBYP v.28 Winter 1995 p.124

Gillespie(T) indicates this is a core title.

HB Guide v.5 Fall 1994 p.370

SA v.94 May 1995 p.42

Social Education v.59 April 1995 p.214

The reviews make this seem an important title.  I wanted it include because

Paul Williams is a black architect unmentioned in the current collection.

Isaacson, Philip M. (1993) Round buildings, square buildings, and buildings that wiggle like a fish. New York: Knopf.

HB Guide Interactive

Considered a core title in Gillespie(C), Price, and Willson.

It is still circulating at KCLS.

NYTBR v.104 Dec 5, 1999 p.16

SLJ v.45 Sept 1999 p.237+

Also considered a core title in Best, Gillespie(C), Price, and Wilson.  The original is a classic.  This volume

includes all original plus information on how it was written and changes or additions Macaulay might have

made if written today. It is hard to understand why EPL did not purchase it.  I think it’s important.

Malone, Mary (1995) Maya Lin: Architect and artist. Springsfield, NJ, USA: Enslow Publishers.

BL v.91 April 15, 1995 p.1494

Because women are currently not included in this part of the collection.

It’s possible that a vendor discount would make this cheaper, but one would then have to add shipping charges if applicable.  Amazon new books would ship free if one ordered from there.  If funds are tight, I have starred 6 books that I consider to be the most important.

Last Comments

The Everett Public Library was actually amazingly well supplied with most volumes noted in review sources in the J720-J729 section.  It compared well with the much larger library systems to the south.  There were a few newer titles and several classics missing.  Many of the latter were old enough so that their only availability is used.  I have more comments about the process of this assignment and ancillary learning gained, but I will submit that as a separate document.
